Math Placement Exam (MPE)

McLennan Community College uses the ALEKS placement exam to place students into MATH 2412 (Pre-Calculus) and MATH 2413 (Calculus I).

This exam gives students a non-credit option to skip a prerequisite math course. The exam measures whether a student is prepared to succeed in MATH 2412 or MATH 2413.

What Score Do You Need? 

  • You must score 61 or higher to register for MATH 2412 (Pre-Calculus).
  • You must score 80 or higher to register for MATH 2413 (Calculus I).

Exam Fee

  • The ALEKS account fee is $20.00 and includes 5 test attempts.
  • Students who take the exam virtually using Respondus Monitor must pay an additional $5.00 proctoring fee.

If you choose to take the exam with Respondus Monitor instead of at the MCC Testing Center, you will pay the $5.00 fee the first time you launch the proctored exam.

Note: Students testing at the MCC Testing Center do not pay the $5.00 Respondus Monitor fee.

How to Take the Exam

  1. Register for the ALEKS exam in RegisterBlast by clicking Schedule an Exam.
  2. After you register, MCC will send you an email with instructions for purchasing the ALEKS exam.
  3. Purchase the ALEKS exam through ALEKS using the code provided in the email. The exam costs $20.00.
If you plan to take the exam at the MCC Testing Center, complete your ALEKS account setup before arriving for your exam.

What to Bring on Test Day

You must bring a valid, unexpired photo ID. Acceptable government-issued IDs include:
  • Driver's license
  • State ID card
  • Passport
  • Military ID
  • National ID
  • Tribal ID
  • Naturalization card
  • Certificate of Citizenship
  • Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)

Photos or photocopies of IDs are not accepted. The photo on the ID must be clear and recognizable.

Student IDs are accepted for the following exams:

  • ALEKS Exam
  • MCC Course Exams
  • Correspondence Exams
  • TSIA

 Resources Allowed During the Exam:

  • If a question allows a calculator, one will appear on your screen.
  • Outside calculators are not allowed, including handheld, computer, or phone calculators.
  • You may use scratch paper and a pencil during the exam.

Submitting Scores

To have your scores added to your MCC record:

  1. Download a PDF score report from your ALEKS account.
  2. Email the report to testingservices@mclennan.edu.
  3. Include your MCC student ID number in the email.

If you test at the MCC Testing Center, your scores can be printed and entered into your record on the same day.

ReTest

  • You have 5 test attempts.
  • You must wait 24 hours between each attempt.

Testing Accommodations

Testing Services works with Accommodations (Disability Services) to provide testing accommodations for students approved under the ADA.

Students who need accommodations must first register with Accommodations. Complete this process early so Testing Services has enough time to prepare your accommodations.

After your accommodations are approved, you must notify Testing Services. This allows staff to update your RegisterBlast account before you register for an exam.

Students who do not complete these steps may not receive their approved accommodations for that exam.
