Admission Process & Criteria
Application Deadline
The deadline to register for the next class is November 1.
We recommend that all future students meet with a Health Information Technology faculty member before they apply.
How to Apply
- Apply for admission to McLennan Community College.
- Submit a Health Information Technology Program Application & Checklist.
Admission Requirements
Meeting the criteria below does not guarantee that you will be accepted into the program. Most students accepted into the program score higher than the minimum requirements. The Health Information Technology Admissions Committee makes all admission decisions.
1. TSI Completion - You must be TSI complete before you can be admitted to the program.
2. GPA Requirement - You must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 in these three courses:
- HITT 1205 – Medical Terminology I
- HITT 1301 – Health Data Content & Structure
- HITT 1341 – Coding & Classification Systems
These courses must also meet these requirements:
- You may take each course only two times
- The highest grade you earn will be used
- You must have completed the courses within the past 5 years
3. Background Check - You must complete a background check through the company chosen by the Health Information Technology (HIT) Program. Your admission may be affected by the type conviction and when it happened.
Class Size
The number of students accepted each year depends on how many clinical sites are available. Usually, the program accepts no more than 25 students each year. Students are admitted in priority order until all available spots are filled.
