- To become a tutor, one must meet the following qualifications chosen to ensure tutors are academically acute, responsible, and are appropriate models for students. Tutors must:
- Have completed one semester of college as a non-dual credit student. This ensures experience with balance and life skills.
- Maintain a 3.0 or higher cumulative average along with a “B” or better in any subject specialty. This can be verified by providing a transcript or permission for the Tutoring Program Specialist to verify this information.
- Meet all College employment requirements.
- Be in good standing with one’s academic or workforce program.
- Be able to obtain a recommendation from a former or current faculty member in the tutor’s primary field of study via email or letter.
- Be physically present on campus and available on Zoom.
- Be knowledgeable about Brightspace and able to assist students with assignment expectations from courses outside the tutor’s subject specialty.
- Required Skills:
- Communicate and work with students, staff, and faculty of various ages, backgrounds, and abilities. Able to help students identify their learning style and adapt to different teaching styles. Maintain MCC’s core values of Respect, Inclusiveness, Integrity, Communication, and Excellence. Document all tutoring sessions using tutor reports.
- Other:
- Mandatory, paid initial tutor orientation (FERPA, Title IX, Homebase, Timesheets training, and Covid -19 via Brightspace) and ongoing, monthly training. In addition to covering foundational principles, these training's are used to reinforce positive behaviors and improve areas of growth. Student workers are required to work on campus during scheduled hours, however, most tutoring is delivered via Zoom. All equipment is provided.

If you are an MCC student who is eligible for employment through the Federal Work-Study Program, you may apply for the work-study jobs available on campus.
To determine if you are eligible for the College Work-study Program, simply Log on to the MyMCC. Click on Financial Aid Award Letter to view work-study eligibility and amounts.
Requirements:
- You must be enrolled in courses with MCC.
- You must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to become eligible for College Work-study.
- You must meet Satisfactory Progress.
Steps to apply and hiring process:
- To find a work-study job, please scroll down to the list below.
- Click on the Department to view available positions (ex. Athletics, Math Lab).
- Click on the Work-study Position to view Job Description and Required Skills (ex. Student Athletic Trainer, Math Lab Tutor).
- Complete work-study application.
- Enter your personal information and specify skills and experience - please be detailed, as if you are submitting a resume. This is your employment application.
- Submit your application.
- Once submitted, the Office of Financial Aid will review your application for completeness, eligibility and enrollment. Incomplete applications will not be considered for employment.
- Your work-study eligibility will be determined and your application forwarded to the hiring supervisor(s) of your selected positions.
- Hiring supervisor(s) will contact you if interested in interviewing you for the position.
- Once selected by a department to fill a position, a criminal background check must be performed. The hiring supervisor will request that you complete the following forms: DPS Criminal History Form, MCC Background Release Form, Authorization Form and Job Responsibilities Form. These forms must be submitted to the Office of Financial Aid for review.
- Hiring supervisors will be notified of the approved background checks and will contact you to complete W-4 and I-9 forms. You will complete these forms and provide original identity documents to the hiring supervisor to verify the I-9. Departments will submit these forms to the Office of Financial Aid for input in the E-Verify system where the Department of Homeland Security and Social Security Administration will verify your eligibility to work in the United States. You will be notified if you are determined NOT eligible to participate as a student worker in MCC’s Work-Study Program.
- If you are eligible to begin work, the hiring supervisor will contact you to set your start date. Under no circumstances will you be allowed to work as a student worker before completing the I-9 form and receiving confirmation of eligibility to work. Students who work prior to receiving this confirmation may be terminated as a student worker. The Office of Financial Aid will contact you if any additional information may be necessary to determine your eligibility.
