MCC’s Adult Education & Literacy graduation ceremony set for June 29

Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) at McLennan Community College (MCC) will hold its annual graduation ceremony at 7 p.m. June 29 at the Conference Center, 4601 N. 19th St., on the MCC campus.

The ceremony will honor 65 men and women receiving their Graduate Education Development (GED) Certificate of High School Equivalency, recognized throughout the United States and Canada. To receive the GED, students must pass four exams: language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.

Jumoke Omolara Ibeke, who arrived in the United States in 2012, will be recognized as valedictorian. Ibeke, who moved to Waco in 2014, will receive a scholarship to attend MCC, where she plans to pursue a degree in health care.

“The students and staff have worked hard this year to achieve these goals,” Michelle Telg-Moore, AEL Program Director said. “Our students benefit and make progress because the staff and teachers are compassionate while adhering to the rigorous standards mandated by Texas Workforce Commission (TWC).”

The ceremony will also include 44 students who participated in the AEL Integrated Education and Technology (IET) programs: 27 Certified Nursing Aides (CNA), 15 Paraprofessionals – Teacher Aides, one Business Management Occupational Service Award (OSA) and one Certified Production Technician (CPT).

“Our IET program grant allows us to provide scholarships for training, certificate programs and select college courses,” Jasmine Kirk, IET Specialist said. “These programs enable students to enter the workforce with a valuable skillset in hand. We ensure students’ success by providing contextualized instruction, on-the-job skills training, and career navigation services.”

MCC is a provider of adult education and literacy programs funded by TWC. These programs support opportunities for individuals who are at least 16 years old, lack a high school credential or function below the high school level, or are unable to speak, read, or write English, and are seeking career training, high school equivalency preparation, or college.

TWC partners with local AEL providers, Workforce Solutions offices and nonprofit agencies to promote an increased opportunity for adult learners to transition to postsecondary education, training, or employment. Courses are free to students who meet the requirements of the program.
