Waco and Surrounding Communities

Located about one hour from both Dallas and Austin, Waco is known as the "Heart of Texas" and is part of McLennan County, which has a population of 225,000. Waco residents enjoy the small-town atmosphere with the benefits of city life, such as the revitalized downtown and restored warehouse district.

The city is brimming with cultural opportunities, including concerts, plays, museums and charitable events. Waco is the educational hub of the county, with two higher education institutions other than MCC: Baylor University and Texas State Technical College.

Just outside the city limits are several smaller communities with a real hometown feel, new housing developments and excellent school systems. McLennan County is relatively rural, with many small towns located throughout its 1,000 square miles.

Two children play on climbing bars at a playground, stepping across a curved metal structure supported by vertical poles. Wood chips cover the ground, and additional playground equipment and trees appear in the background. A calm river flows in the foreground with green vegetation along the banks and limestone cliffs rising in the distance. Dense trees line the top and base of the cliffs under a clear sky. A white suspension-style pedestrian bridge spans over a river, reflected in the water below. Trees and a hillside surround the bridge, creating a scenic outdoor setting.
