***Non-Degree Seeking Students or Summer-Only or Minimester-Only Students

Students attending other universities, both public and private, who wish to take classes at MCC during summer or winter terms are considered "Non-Degree Seeking" students.  To be considered a Non-Degree Seeking student, you must have attended another college or university in the long semester immediately preceding the term in which you wish to attend MCC. These students do not need to be advised by an MCC advisor to be able to register as long as they have turned in their most recent college transcript and have taken any prerequisites required for classes they wish to take at MCC. Non-Degree Seeking students are not eligible for financial aid and must adhere to the payment deadlines found on the MCC Calendar: For assistance with turning in transcripts, obtaining waivers, degree changes, etc. please contact Highlander Central at:

Office Location: Enrollment Services Center (First floor)

Steps to Plan your Future

MCC offers a wide variety of academic programs to meet your educational needs. Determine which path is right for you by exploring MCC Pathways or visiting Career Services.

After you apply to MCC, you can start on the steps to become a student immediately. The steps do not need to be completed in the order they appear on the website, but it is recommended that students complete Step 3 before meeting with their advisor. Advising is required for all MCC students. Expect new-student appointments to take about an hour. To schedule an appointment, please call 254-299-8614, email advise@mclennan.edu, or drop by Advising & Career Services in the Student Services Center, 2nd floor, during regular business hours.

An advisor is assigned to you in order to help you be successful at MCC and achieve your academic goals. College is a new experience for most students and is different from high school or the workplace. Your advisor can help you make the transition so that you can get the most out of your time at MCC.

All students will meet with an academic advisor every semester.  To contact the Advising and Career Services office, please call (254) 299-8614.

After meeting with an Advising Specialist, you may be assigned to an advising department based on your major. Who is my advisor?

About Advising Services

Mandatory advising was started in 2015 to help students avoid taking unnecessary courses, meet their TSI and prerequisite requirements, graduate sooner, and get connected to appropriate resources, among many other things.  All students are required to get their classes approved by an advisor before they can register for classes. Your advisor can help you to:

  • gain an understanding of MCC policies and degree requirements
  • choose or change your major
  • avoid courses for which you're unprepared
  • prepare for transfer or career opportunities
  • track progress toward and plan for graduation
  • select and schedule courses

The primary purpose of academic advising is to engage students in the continuous and collaborative process of creating student-centered educational plans that are compatible with the students’ career and life goals.

  • Empower students to take responsibility for their education.
  • Encourage and guide students as they define and develop realistic goals.
  • Discuss academic performance and implications of performance on future goals.
  • Clarify to students the curriculum, graduation requirements, and college policies and procedures.
  • Respond to student needs by providing referrals to available resources and services on campus.
  • Be accessible for meeting with advisees by appointment and on a walk-in basis.
  • Document communication with students and comply with established standards of confidentiality.

  • Meet with an advisor before each semester.
  • Keep your advisor informed about changes in your academic progress, course selection, financial aid status, and academic/career goals.
  • Keep scheduled appointments.
  • Ask questions to ensure your understanding.
  • Follow through on needed actions identified in each advising session.
  • Prepare for advising sessions and bring any information related to planning.
  • Register for classes (Find out how!).
