Mac T. Highlander
Meet Mac the Highlander
A Fierce Spirit with Proud Scottish Roots
McLennan Community College’s beloved Highlander mascot was born out of a desire to inspire school spirit and honor the College’s rich heritage. In 1967, a student committee led by the first Dean of Instruction, Dr. Chester Hastings, set out to create a meaningful identity that would connect MCC to the local community and its cultural roots.
During a drive back to Waco, Dr. Hastings made a stop at the Wee Scots Shop and Scottish Museum in Salado, where he discovered Central Texas’s deep Scottish connections. He was especially struck by the McLennan family crest and tartan—symbols that reflected both the College’s name and the Scottish ancestry of local historical figures like Neil McLennan (the county’s namesake) and William Cameron (the former landowner of the College grounds).
The student group embraced the concept, choosing the McLennan tartan as the school's colors. With approval from the Laird of Clan MacLennan in Scotland, MCC was granted permission to use the clan’s crest and motto.
Former counselor Keith Geisler brought the Highlander warrior to life in the form of a bold graphic figure, sword in hand—an image seen throughout campus and MCC branding today.
Enter Mac
In 2008, Clif-Ann Paris, a former graphic designer for MCC, designed the first official Highlander mascot costume to use at games and events. In Fall 2010, auditions were held for students to bring the character to life. A campus-wide naming contest led to the mascot being officially named “Mac,” a suggestion by MCC employees Cynthia SoRelle, Stephanie (Paris) Trammell, and Jonathan Kutz.
Mac made his grand debut in November 2010 at a basketball game in The Highlands gym against Navarro College.
