Welcome to McLennan Community College’s Alternative Teacher Certification Program. You are at the beginning of the preparation stage of becoming a certified teacher in the State of Texas. Your career will be both rewarding and challenging. Over the past several years, our program has grown from a meager beginning of 7 students to well over 200 students in over 20 areas of certification. These students are currently employed in 47 school districts across the state. It is our sincere wish your experience here is rewarding and that success will follow you in your new career. McLennan Community College’s Alternative Teacher Certification program is accredited by the Texas Education Agency (TEA).

Upon successful completion of MCC’s program and state mandated certification exams, individuals will be certified to teach in Texas schools. The program trains individuals with a bachelor’s degree who desire to enter the teaching profession.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Alternative Teacher Certification Program is to assist in providing the development of quality teaching through a high-quality alternative route to teaching in a community of learning that attends to the school district’s content needs and to the special cultural diversity needs of the area’s children. The Alternative Teacher Certification Program endorses McLennan Community College’s concept of open admissions and provides support designed to assist students to succeed in their educational goals.

Services

The program trains individuals with a bachelor’s degree who desire to enter the teaching profession. We offer over twenty content areas that an individual may wish to be certified to teach. Students must enroll and complete three courses: a Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities course which helps prepare a student to teach in the classrooms in Texas; a content specialization course; and, an internship course which consists of two semesters. Individuals will be certified to teach in Texas schools upon successful completion of the program and state mandated certification exams. The internship and program instruction are highly supervised.
