Circulating Books

Students

Circulating books may be checked out for a period of two weeks. A current Highlander OneCard is required to check out library materials. There is a limit of five books per subject and a total number of 10 items may be checked out at any one time. A book may be renewed one time as long as it is not overdue and there have been no holds placed on it. The renewal period is for two weeks. Call 299-8325 or renew items online through the “My Account” tab of the Online Catalog. Toward the end of the semester the circulation period will be shorter because all books must be returned by the end of the semester.

To search for a book, go to the Online Catalog.

Faculty

Circulating books can be loaned until the end of the semester and renewals are available if there are no other requests pending for the item(s). Books may be renewed by telephone or in person. A Highlander OneCard is requested when checking books out.

To search for a book, go to the Online Catalog.

Alarm Clocks

Alarm clocks are available for a two-hour check out period.

Book Return

During the hours when the library is open, books should be placed in the book drop located next to the Information Desk in the library.

Fines and Fees

Fines are charged on overdue items as follows:

  1. Fines of $1.00 per day are charged for overdue circulating books, to a maximum of $14.00 per item. When the $14.00 maximum has been reached, a "hold" in the amount of $35.00 is imposed on the student's record.
  2. Fines of $1.00 per hour are charged for overdue hourly reserve items for every hour that the library is open, including study rooms and laptops. The maximum fine will be $14.00 before a "hold" in the amount of $35.00 is imposed on the student's record.
  3. A $1.00 per day fine for every day that the library is open is to be applied to overdue 1-day, 2-day, 3-day, or 7-day reserve items. The maximum fine will be $14.00 before a "hold" in the amount of $35.00 is imposed on the student's record.
  4. All fines must be paid by means of the Highlander OneCard. The library has no way of accepting payments in cash.

Item Requests

If a student wants a book that is checked out to someone else, the student may request the book by using the Request Item feature in the Online Catalog. The book will then be held for the student when it is returned on it due date.

Laptops

Laptop computers are available for student use at the library’s Circulation Desk for a two-hour usage period. Fines on overdue laptops are $1.00 per hour, beginning immediately after the two-hour usage period expires.

Lost Books

Replacement costs for lost books are to include the cost of the book (if still in print) based on current pricing as found in Books in Print, plus a $10.00 processing fee. If the book is no longer in print, a search for a replacement copy will be made through standard online used book resources. In addition to the cost of replacement books located through this method, there will be a $10.00 processing fee. A $50.00 per item flat fee will charged for books that cannot be located through a normal online search. If the lost item is a laptop computer, the amount for repayment will be the depreciated value of the computer, plus any outstanding fines or registrar's hold fees.

Overdue Notices

Overdue notices are e-mailed to all patrons who have overdue materials. However, this is only a courtesy service, and any overdue fine is your responsibility.

Periodicals and Newspapers

Magazine and newspaper articles are important sources of information, particularly on recent events. A list of all the magazines and newspapers to which MCC subscribes can be found on the library home page under Periodical Lists, or individual titles may be searched in the Online Catalog. Full text electronic subscription databases are also available.

Periodicals and newspapers must be used in the library and cannot be checked out. However, photocopies may be made for 8 cents per page. The Highlander OneCard must be used to make copies. Cash is not accepted.

Reserves

Materials placed on reserve by MCC faculty are available at the Circulation Desk. Some reserve materials must be used in the library. Others may be checked out for short loan periods. Loan periods for reserve materials are set by instructors.

Some instructors post reserve materials on the library website. These materials may be accessed from the Course Reserves link on the library’s home page.

Security Breach

Deliberate removal of materials from the Library without checking them out is a violation of item VII (7) of the MCC General Conduct Policy, and may result in disciplinary action. Removal or attempts to remove any item or parts of any item Library property may result in suspension of library privileges and/or a hold placed on the student’s record. Determination of whether a security breach has occurred will be made by the Library Director after review of staff incident reports and a scheduled consultation with the person(s) involved.

Study Rooms

There are five Quiet Study Rooms available to students on a first come, first served basis. Each room is equipped with a networked desktop computer. These rooms may be checked out at the Information Desk. MCC students must have a Highlander OneCard in order to check out a study room.

Please note the following guidelines:

  1. Rooms may be checked out for up to two hours at a time.
  2. Those who use the Quiet Study Rooms are expected to follow the MCC General Conduct policy and must be considerate of other library users. Noise should be kept to a minimum, and litter should be disposed of properly.
  3. Quiet Study Rooms may be used for individual or group study, including sessions that incidentally include consumption of food or drink. Activities that are primarily meal functions should be held in the Highlander Café food court area on the second floor of the LTC.
  4. Rooms will be kept locked when they are not in use.
  5. A fine of $1.00 per hour is charged if the two hour checkout time is exceeded.
