Medical Laboratory Technician

Welcome

The Medical Laboratory Technician program at McLennan Community College offers a two-year Associate in Applied Science degree and is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences.

This program prepares entry-level medical laboratory technicians for an important role in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of disease. Students learn to perform tests using blood, urine, and body fluids in clinical chemistry, microbiology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, immunohematology, and immunology. It includes many clinical hours training on-site at area hospitals and clinics.

Graduates are eligible to take a national certifying examination. Numerous employment opportunities are available in hospitals, clinics, doctor's offices, research laboratories and industry laboratories.

Application Process

Complete an application for admission to McLennan Community College and submit to the Office of Admissions/Registrar. Applicants must be admitted to the college before they can be considered for admission to the Medical Laboratory Technician Program.

Submit appropriate transcripts to the Office of Admissions/Registrar.

  • First-time college students must submit their high school transcripts or GED scores.
  • Persons who have attended college elsewhere must submit official transcripts of all college work.

Submit TASP or Accuplacer scores. For more information on taking either test, please contact Testing at 299-8473.

ACT scores are part of the criteria for admission to the MLT program. Arrangements for taking the exam should be made far enough in advance of the admissions deadline that the scores are available for evaluation during the application process. Curriculum: Consists of 10 Academic courses, 19 MLT courses, and one optional phlebotomy clinical. Academic courses may be taken before admission into the program.

Phlebotomy

A phlebotomist is a person trained to collect blood specimens for analysis in a medical laboratory. The structured phlebotomy program at MCC is offered through the Medical Laboratory Technician program and leads to a certificate in phlebotomy.

There are no academic prerequisites other than a high school diploma but class size is limited. Prospective students must also be TASP-compliant

Classroom and student laboratory training is scheduled in the on-campus laboratory. Clinical laboratory training hours are scheduled at area hospitals and clinics. Upon completion of the required courses the individual is eligible for national certification as a certified phlebotomist. Employment opportunities are available in hospital laboratories, clinics and doctor's offices.
