Theatre Scholarship Guidelines
and Requirements
The Theatre Department awards a significant number of scholarships
to theatre majors based on talent, academic performance, and
experience. In addition, theatre faculty serve as the selection
committee for four endowed scholarships and one “Hearts
in the Arts” scholarship awarded through the McLennan
Foundation: Martha A. Beard Theatre Arts, Ruth St. Claire
Murphy Fine Arts, Reba Robertson Theatre Arts, Willard J.
Still Musical Theatre and HIA Scholarships. Interested students
should request a theatre scholarship application form by calling
the Visual & Performing Arts Secretary at 254.299.8283.
A scholarship is awarded in dollar figures on a semester-by-semester
basis. A student either auditions or presents a portfolio
to at least two faculty members prior to being awarded a scholarship.
Students may audition on campus or through organized off-campus
auditions sponsored by TETA, Thespians Conference, etc. At
the end of the semester during which a scholarship has been
awarded, a student should submit a brief letter of intent
explaining why he/she should continue to receive a scholarship
for each succeeding semester.
The McLennan Theatre Scholarship program is the backbone
of the department. Scholarships represent an investment in
the student’s potential and in his or her future. To
retain a theatre scholarship in subsequent semesters, the
recipient is expected to demonstrate academic excellence at
all times, to remain committed to the department program and
to perform appropriate duties when called upon during the
semester--above and beyond the requirements of a non-scholarship
student.
