When McLennan County voters approved a historic bond proposal to form McLennan Community College on Nov. 2, 1965, the early organizers of the College had the best of intentions to open an affordable institution of higher education that would serve all Central Texans for years to come.
The first MCC classes were held on the James Connally Air Force Base on Sept. 19, 1966. There were 855 students - 355 students more than the board or administrators had expected - and nearly 100 courses were offered.
Today, MCC is a popular college of choice for many Central Texans. Over the past 40 years, MCC's growth has averaged 6% a year. Projections show that if we grow only 5% between now and 2015, our enrollment will reach 12,500 students.
In November 2006, the MCC Board of Trustees held a bond election in which voters approved a $74.5 million bond package that ensures the future of the College. Ground is expected to be broken in July 2007 on the first of three new buildings, which will include a science building, general classroom building, and emergency services center.
As you will see, McLennan County would not be the same without MCC, and MCC is grateful to McLennan County for its tremendous support over the past four decades. Enjoy learning more about MCC and this great community. It's been an exciting 40-year journey!
